The North Atlanta Soaring Association (NASA) Hosted the 17th Annual Mid-South Soaring Championship (MSSC), May 23rd – 25th 2008.  The Event was held in Duluth, GA at the Scott Hudgens Park NASA field in the River Green Industrial Park at 4545 River Green Parkway.   Duluth is located 10 miles north of downtown Atlanta.  The site consists of approximately 20 acres of cleared, flat fields with 100% dedicated use of the field and no soccer activity what so ever.

This is the third time NASA has hosted the MSSC and 2008 was one of the best events yet.

This year’s contest consisted of hand launch on Friday and RES and two separate thermal duration events (Saturday & Sunday). The thermal duration events were flown man-on-man using five winches with a sixth back-up.  Golf carts were used to retrieve lines.

While competitive spirit draws many of the contestants, we cannot forget that the MSSC is known for an opportunity to meet and renew friendships within the close knit soaring community.  In an effort to foster the exchange of soaring folklore, we kept the field open Saturday for sport flying while serving a low country boil dinner at the field whis was just fantastic. The all you can eat feast included shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob, potatoes and other fresh seafood,  meats and seasonal vegetables prepared at the field by the same chef who met with such acclaim at our othercontest.  Fast Freedie known the world over for his high Thermal brewing concoctions was on hand for the feast and did not let anyone down as all whistles got wet.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the next Mid South!
